Gone Fishin’—at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Snowshoe, WV

The fish are jumpin’ at lakes, rivers and streams in Pocahontas County, home to Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

by Dale Leatherman | June 17, 2010

Snowshoe Mountain Resort has the good fortune to lie in Pocahontas County, the birthplace of eight rivers including the Cranberry, Williams and Elk, all known for their robust populations of rainbow, brook and brown trout. The Elk is one of the country’s few pristine, gold medal trout streams.

Flowing through the resort is the Shaver’s Fork of the Cheat River, a prime catch-and-release stream that widens into a major fishery as it …

Head to Snowshoe for some of the region's most challenging golf and glorious mountain views

by Dale Leatherman | June 07, 2010

Christened Hawthorne Valley when designer Gary Player clipped the ribbon in 1993,  the Raven Golf Club at Snowshoe Mountain Resort was renamed in 2001, when it became the flagship of Intrawest Corporation’s Raven Golf Group. By any name, it is an unforgettable course—beautiful, but as tactical as they come.

Ranked the number one public access course in the state according to several national publications, The Raven is one of Golfstyles “must-play” courses …

Exploring Snowshoe Mountain Resort on Snowmobiles

Climb aboard a mechanical "horse" for an adventure in the backcountry.

by Dale Leatherman | March 21, 2010

The last big snowstorm at Snowshoe was just beginning when my photographer and I set off with the resort’s Adventure Center guides C.J Caudret and Scott Thalwitzer on a two-hour exploration of remote trails on the 11,000-acre resort—and a little beyond, to a fire tower in the Monongahela National Forest

Snowshoe’s machines are wide-based, stable and very responsive. The warmers in the handles and throttle are so hot I had …

Snowshoe Mountain Resort Extends Spring Skiing

It's 50 degrees, the snow base is three feet, and you have until April 5 to ski in shorts!

by Dale Leatherman | March 21, 2010

The spring skiing conditions at Snowshoe have never been better, and the season has been extended to April 5 so you can take advantage of it. We were treated to some balmy temperatures (50s) this week, but it’s cold enough at night that the groomers can keep the slopes in great condition.

The groomers have a three-foot base to work with, the result of record snowfall this winter—228 inches. So far. We always have …

Snowshoeing at Snowshoe Mountain Resort

The backcountry wilderness of the 11,000-acre resort is laced with trails suitable for snowshoeing.

by Dale Leatherman | February 18, 2010

We’ve had more than 170 inches of snow this season, and much of it is still on the ground. The conditions are ideal for snowshoeing on the backcountry trails-- winding through spruce trees festooned with snow, the only sound the swish of your snowshoes and an occasional birdcall.

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. It’s that simple. You can rent snowshoes and poles seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Outdoor …

Travel Guide to Snowshoe Mountain, WV

Why you should visit Snowshoe Mountain Resort

by Dale Leatherman | February 15, 2010

Even though we’re in the middle of a winter with epic snow—170 inches and counting—Snowshoe is a destination for all seasons. Fall brings a dazzling display of colors because the woods have a great mix of hardwoods and spruce, and there are so many places where you can see sweeping mountain views.

Summers are mild, never hot and humid, and there are no bugs. We didn’t bother to put a.c. in our house, and …

Cuervo Games of Winter, Snowshoe Mountain, WV

Fun events throughout the weekend lead up to Super Bowl Sunday in Snowshoe.

by Dale Leatherman | February 02, 2010

Super Bowl Sunday is the culmination of a big weekend at Snowshoe—the Cuervo Games of Winter, which starts with a Cuervo Warm-Up Party at Hoot’s Thursday night.  We’re getting  lots of fresh snow leading up to the weekend, so the slopes should be primed for skiing and riding—and for some outrageous activities, such as a box race, tug of war and duckie race.

There will be Super Bowl parties all over the mountain this …

Ember Restaurant, Snowshoe Mountain, WV

An eclectic menu and offbeat decor measure up to another triumph for restaurateur Brian Ball.

by Dale Leatherman | January 25, 2010

Even if you haven’t been to Snowshoe in a few years, you probably remember The Red Fox, which was everybody’s favorite restaurant for a special dinner. The setting was woodsy chic and the eclectic menu ranged from cottage cheese soup to wild boar.

The Red Fox closed in 2006 but restaurateur Brian Ball is still practicing his magic as proprietor of ember (small “e”) in Soaring Eagle Lodge. The restaurant …

MLK Weekend, Snowshoe Mountain, WV

Martin Luther King Weekend (Jan 15-18) promises great snow, but you don’t have to go downhill to enjoy it.

by Dale Leatherman | January 14, 2010

We’ve had 103 inches of snow so far this season, and the single-digit temps caused it to be feather-light powder that has packed to a lovely 50-inch base.  The cold made it necessary to REALLY bundle up to stay warm last week, but the MLK Weekend forecast is for sun and high 30s. We’re expecting more snow on Sunday and Monday, so you’ll get a chance to make some tracks in fresh snow. All 60 runs …

84 Inches of Snow, Snowshoe Mountain, WV

It's snowed 11 days straight at Snowshoe Mountain Resort and the snow rivals Utah's famous powder.

by Dale Leatherman | January 06, 2010

I’ve lived at Snowshoe more than ten years and have never seen a start to winter like this. Utah has nothing on us! We’ve had 84 inches of snow in less than a month, and every morning for the past 11 days I’ve stepped out my door into five or more inches of feathery powder snow. It’s like walking in clouds—you can’t see your feet!  With temps in the teens, there’s no melting, so the snow …
